The theory test

The theory test is comprised of two parts:

  1. The multiple choice part
  2. The hazard perception part

You can read more about taking the theory test here.

The multiple choice part

To help you prepare for the multiple choice part of the test you should read the following material:

  1. The Highway Code
  2. Know your traffic signs
  3. The Official DVSA Guide to Driving – the essential skills

The Highway Code

The Highway Code is essential reading as part of your theory test preparation.  It contains many rules of the road which are legal requirements.  By knowing the Highway Code you can help to improve road safety and also ensure that you are not breaking the law, which could see you be fined, get points on your licence or in serious cases get sent to prison.

The Highway Code is available online.

Know your traffic signs

know your traffic signsTraffic signs play an important part in directing, informing and controlling how we use the roads. These signs are there to help keep the roads as safe as possible for all road users. This makes knowledge of traffic signs essential.

There are three basic types of sign that you will see often, these are signs that give orders, signs that give warnings and signs that give information. Each type of sign has a different shape.  You can read more about traffic signs in the PDF document which is provided online here.

Learning what the different traffic signs mean as part of your theory test preparation will not only help when you take your theory test but will also help you when you are out on the road during your driving lessons.

The essential skills

The essential skills is a book produced by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and will provide you with what you need to learn for safe driving skills for life. This book is available at book shops on the high street or via the online shop.  You should consider buying and reading this book as part of your theory test preparation.

The hazard perception part

The DVSA provides a DVD to help develop your hazard perception skills and this is called The Official DVSA Guide to Hazard Perception. This book is available from book stores or via the online shop.
